Portugal Crowned European Champions After Epic Penalty Shootout

Portugal Defeats England 6-5 on Penalties in Thrilling Euro 2004 Final

Portugal has won the 2004 European Championship, defeating England 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.

The match was a tense and closely contested affair, with both teams having chances to win in regulation. Portugal took the lead in the 13th minute through Cristiano Ronaldo, but England equalized in the 51st minute through a penalty from Wayne Rooney.

Neither team could find a winning goal in extra time, so the match went to a penalty shootout. Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo was the hero of the hour, saving David Beckham's penalty to give Portugal the victory.

Portugal's victory is their first major international trophy since winning Euro 2000. It is also the first time that a team has won the European Championship on home soil.
